Was checking out older entries and I saw that I bought a Bump J 12" when I was in Boston. I mentioned that he couldn't seem to get an album out for some reason.

Since I wrote that, Bump J was busted trying to rob a bank.

OOPS.

Still a great joint, though.

RIP Bump J's career [pours a little out].

I didn't update at all in 2007. It was a good year.

-Living with Missy still rules
-Cats are good
-Played a bunch of shows/recorded
-Grew a beard (of sorts)
-Still working at a record store
-Freelancing is going awesome-like

The most major-ist negative for the year was Punk Planet closing its doors, but all good things must come to an end, right?

Also - saw tons of good bands.

See you in 2010.

So, I went to Boston and came back. It was fun. Hanging out with Mark and Sara was cool, and even though Boston seems to be incredibly packed with people and everything closes at like 10 p.m., we still managed to drink some local beer, grill, see some sights, and go record shopping. Newest buys (Boston and Chicago):

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
Necro - I Need Drugs (Bought this in Boston, and a really cheap but incredibly beat up copy came into Reckless, which I'll probably buy for the artwork)
Los Natas - Toba Trance
Vader - The Beast
Tool - Aenima
Spirit - Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus
Power and the Glory, the - Call Me Armageddon
Autopsy - Severed Survival
Isis - Live 03.19.03
Pharcyde - Labcabincalifornia
Bump J - On the Run b/w Bump J
-This guy is a Kanye West "protegee" that just can't seem to get an album out for some reason. Though he had some minor local success (and maybe elsewhere, but I doubt it) with his first single "Move Around," not much else has been heard from him. Ironically, I bought this in Boston.
Converge - You Fail Me
I Hate Myself - 3 Songs
-A new release from the defunct I Hate Myself. Only three songs, but after their incredible self-titled full-length back in 1997 along with a small handful of splits, I'll take what I can get.
Goretex - The Art of Dying
-I bought this because it was in the "reduced price" bin at a Newbury Comics in Boston. He's one of Necro's pals (who also handles the production), so some of the beats should at least be interesting.
Jungle Brothers - Straight Out the Jungle
-Another Boston score, I had an original of this but the record was FUCKED. In fact, one song on the second side skipped, so I got rid of it. It's since been re-issued on double LP, but I found this new, single LP version in Boston and picked it up. Classic.
Cursed - Two
-Another record that I thought was out of print that was found new in Boston (along with that Converge LP). Underrated Canadian hardcore band that features members of Left for Dead. Really heavy-hitting, this is the band I was listening to when I decided to form the Chicago Thrash Ensemble. Useless information!
Cretin - Freakery
-Lots of people have been going crazy for this band, so I bought the LP for way too much (new). We'll see how it goes.
Beastie Boys - Ill Communication
Melvins - Houdini
Dead Meadow - Shivering Kings and Others
-Great morning music.
V/A - Piledriver, the Wrestling Album II
-This is an LP that features professional wrestlers singing crazy songs. It's awesome.
Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Some Swedish death metal band.
Frusciante, John - Curtains
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - I See a Darkness
Less Than Jake - Pezcore
Screeching Weasel - Anthem for a New Tomorrow
Husik, Lida - Bozo

Plus, I bought about a million 7-inches that I'll probably never get around to listening to. In other news, today is Memorial Day, and I have to go to work.

THE DOUBLE DOOR SHOW IS TONIGHT! i'll be there from like stupid 6:30 on (loading in, soundchecking, drinking beer, etc), so feel free to come at 8 when the doors open and say hi! if i forget your name, it's nothing personal. today is going to be insane:

-go into punk planet and set the wheels in motion for a few things that need to be done.
-do some other stuff at the magazine.
-stop at home and make sure i have everything i need (earplugs, etc)
-go to guitar center and buy drum sticks and a new throne.

SIDE NOTE: i haven't had my own drum throne since i bought one in like 2001 when mike and i were both still playing in off yourself. i used it for maybe a few practices and one show, when i subsequently left it in springfield, IL after a show. OOPS.

-pick up eric from class at 4.
-go to the practice space and load shit out.
-go to the double door and get annoyed at wicker park.
-play awesome show.
-wait around forever afterwards.
-go to sleep late and get up early tomorrow.

BONUS. see you there tonight, if you can make it.

fucking hell. Thursday night is the chicago thrash ensemble's third damn show.

apparently, we're playing at 9 p.m. sharp. here's the deal with the "tickets."

if you show up with a ticket to the show, it's five bucks instead of seven. "but, where do i get these tickets?!" i'm going to leave a bunch of them at reckless on milwaukee (AKA my job, right down the street from the double door), so if you're so inclined, you can stop at reckless before we play and pick some up from an employee behind the counter. WORD.

doors are at 8! i'm sure this will be hilarious, as we're playing a total "rock" club, and there probably won't be many people there, but we'll still thrash it the fuck up.

other than that, nothing is going on.

So. My favorite pop punk record of all time is Rhythm Collision's Clobberer. It's just great.

I've been on quite a kick lately, and with the recent purchase of the album on LP (finally), I decided that I wanted a shirt, as I didn't get one when I was lucky enough to see them many years ago. So, I tracked down guitarist/vocalist Harlan Margolias and sent him this email:

"Harlan -

Please excuse this email if it's a bit forward. A number of issues ago I chose "Clobberer" as my reviewer spotlight (an album of the reviewers' choice that's at least five years old and a classic in their eyes) for Punk Planet.

I've always been a huge fan of the band, and was even fortunate enough to see you at the Fireside in Chicago (I think with the Bollweevils).

Recently, an LP copy of "Clobberer" came into the record store I also work in and the old merch sheet had me jonesing for some old RC gear. Just thought I'd email and see if you happened to have any in a box somewhere for sale.

Hell, I'd even meet up with you in Rosemont in March.

Any information is appreciated! Thanks for reading this!

Throwing around that Punk Planet "clout," I know. A few days later I received this:

"Hello Dave

Thanks for the email.

It's always good to hear from old RC friends/fans.

A number of issues ago I chose "Clobberer" as my reviewer spotlight (an album of the reviewers' choice that's at least five years old and a classic in their eyes) for Punk Planet.

Thanks for remembering RC, I appreciate the good words.

By chance do you have a copy of that review (I don't need the mag, just want to read the review).
Maybe online or something?

I've always been a huge fan of the band, and was even fortunate enough to see you at the Fireside in Chicago (I think with the Bollweevils).

Ahhh yes, I do remember that show at the Fireside with fond memories. Chicago was always one of the best
towns and especially with our pals the Weevils. What ever happened to those guys? Is Ken weevil still doing music? (I Figure you might know since you are in Chicago--------if you have any news, please pass it along. I lost contact with him years ago).

Recently, an LP copy of "Clobberer" came into the record store I also work in and the old merch sheet had me jonesing for some old RC gear. Just thought I'd email and see if you happened to have any in a box somewhere for sale.

You know what, actually I do have small box with some shirts in it. I also have a good amount of CDs (Collision Course, Now/Pressure, CrunchTime (live CD---did you ever get that one?), and the last CD "All Bombs Away" which came out after the band was defunct and incidentally didn't get much push/attention (but it's pretty good). If you're collection is missing any of these CD's let me know. Also have some hard to find singles, etc.

What shirt size do you wear? I think I have some Medium and some Large.

Let me know your size and address and I'll send you a package with a bunch of stuff.

Thanks
Harlan"

So, I responded:

"Harlan -

Below is the spotlight on "Clobberer." Maybe you'll get a kick out of it.
Here's the records/CDs that I have, so let me know if you have anything I'm
missing:

LPs:
Clobberer
Now
Crunch Time

7-inches:
Happy as a Clam
Holiday
Irrepressible
Too Long
Girl With the Purple Hair

I wear a size large.

The guys in the Bollweevils are up to the following:

Brian, drums: He was actually a reviewer for Punk Planet, but left before I
took over as reviews editor. He works a a tiger sanctuary in Florida
Bob, bass: I'm not too sure what he's up to.
Ken: He played in this band the Feds for a while, but I don't think he's in
any bands right now
Daryl: is a doctor.

They played a reunion show a few years ago (I think two) as a benefit for
something. They had a different drummer, though.

I found that live LP at a record fair I was working for Punk Planet here in
Chicago. We had a table with shirts and whatnot. This distro from the city
also had a table and I saw that LP and was like "HUH?" I had never even
heard of it before. What's up with that last CD, All Bombs Away? Was that
another Collision Course type thing? I seem to remember hearing about two
posthumous releases, but never saw another after Collision Course.

Also, I'd be willing to pay money for any test presses you have of this
stuff. Any extras, that is. You wouldn't have to worry about them ending up
on eBay or something. They'd be permanent additions to the collection!

Thank you so much for getting back to me!

Dave

p.s. This was written like a year and a half ago . . . I swear I'm a better
writer now.

Rhythm Collision, Clobberer
I've struggled for years within myself as to whether it was this record or
Zoinks! "Bad Move Space Cadet" that wore the crown of pop-punk king, and I
think that I've finally decided on this one. You know it's going to be good
from the get-go with the drum fill and pressing drum beat, and you know
you're hooked once you get to "Hippie Now" and its lyrical diatribe against
a former punk turned granola-head. Recorded over the space of a few years
and some different members you can hear production differences, but it just
makes me nostalgic of the days when a band recorded when they could afford
it and gave their ALBUM time to grow (a nearly extinct art). "Clobberer!" is
harmonious, snotty, and fun all at the right times and never lacking in the
general punk rock feel. Lyrically, Harlan Margolis contemplates daily
frustrations and the will to persevere over life's endless mediocrity. On
"Happy as a Fucking Clam" he sings: "Got holes in my socks but shoes on my
feet" and you just know that he does. With so many bands writing carbon copy
songs about the girl that got away, it's refreshing to hear about a band
sing about the exhilarating stirring of ones heart when you meet someone
cute and you miss your single chance to hang out with them. That, and
"Clobberer!" has a great song about quitting your job ("Too Long"). A
perfect example of what punk rock should be all about."

Finally, the other day, I got this back from him:

"Hello Dave

That review was right on the money, and I don't just say that because it was a good review, but because
everything you said was accurate. That Zoinks album is also one of my top 2-3 from that period as well, still listen to it once is a while. And you are correct, we did record that album over a period of years and in several different sessions, partially because of the financial thing but also partially because it just took a period of years before we could put together an album of songs, all of which I felt were grade A stuff. We could have recorded an album every year like a lot of bands but I'm sure half of each album would end up with songs that were mediocre (like most albums by other bands). With all time factored in (song writing, recording, etc) , I bet that album took about 2-3 years to complete.
I preferred to weed out any stuff that I didn't feel was top of the line.. Basically I wanted to do an album where every song was good enough that it could possibly have been a single. And also, where every song , put in the perfect order would fit together like , well, an album. I spent weeks just picking the song sequence, listening closely on how certain songs sounded back to back, etc. SO that when listed to end to end, it all flowed together well .
ANyway, thanks for noticing and appreciating the album. I'm proud of it and although I have an obvious bias, I too feel it is one of the best from the period and it's gratifying to know that others agree.

You def know your stuff.

What's up with that last CD, All Bombs Away? Was that another Collision Course type thing? I seem to remember hearing about two posthumous releases, but never saw another after Collision Course.

Actually, it was a regular full-length release full of NEW songs. It came out after the band had split and when I was busy with other things, so it never got any push or attention.
It's not as good as Clobberer! but in my opinion there are definitely some Clobbereresque type songs on there, songs which I wrote right after or around the same time. I'll send you a copy and let you decide for yourself.
I think it will be a treat for you. And actually, since you have a real sense/appreciation for the band, I would be curious to hear your opinion of the album.

Also, I'd be willing to pay money for any test presses you have of this stuff. Any extras, that is. You wouldn't have to worry about them ending up on eBay or something. They'd be permanent additions to the collection!

I 'll send you a bunch of other rare RC stuff , singles, test pressings, etc,
Give me your address and I'll get it out. YOu can pay me after. Once I figure it all out, shipping, etc.

It will be like a belated Xmas or Hanukkah for you (Hofer sounds Jewish, is it?------I'm Jewish and I can usually recognize a Jewish last name) or Kwanza, whatever the case may be.

Give me the address and I'll hook you up!
thanks
Harlan"

so, christmas is over. my life has been a whirlwind since we got back from pennsylvania. i learned a valuable lesson when travelling: take the day after you get home off! jesus. even though we only flew for like an hour, we were in the car ahead of time for 45 minutes getting to the airport, sat around there for a while, flew, got our luggage, and then had to take the orange and brown lines home (about an hour or so). then, the next day i had to work. then, it was deadline time for punk planet 72. then, it was christmas.

today, the day after xmas, i'm off. i drove missy to work (and plan on picking her back up at 5) and got the oil in her car changed.

christmas itself was cool. worked on xmas eve and went to the family holiday party. we only stayed for a few hours. my dad dressed up as santa and handed out presents to kids, but i couldn't sit on his lap because the hole in the crotch of my jeans tore open even more when i kneeled down to take a picture of my mom and "santa." oops!

the party used to be at a different cousin's house (who is hindered by worsening health these days) and now it's sorta' cramped and whatnot. also, my grandparents don't come back to chicago from florida anymore, and they were cornerstones of the party. finally, there used to be a big poker game, but since family members have been dying/getting sick, that's been cancelled. times, they are a changing!

so, we took off and dropped my sister off at our the 'rents' before heading over the mark's to hang out for a little bit. left there around midnight and watched some of the steelers game from that day, which we had taped and brought with. finally crashed at like 2 a.m.

got up on xmas at 9:30 or so and had breakfast. opened presents. had dinner. watched embarrassing 8MM footage of me crawling naked down the hallway, and came back to chicago. we made really good time.

loot i received:

from missy:
-bret hart DVD set
-2002 volume of best american sports writing (for a long-winded reason)
-white castle gift card

from sister:
-money towards my soon to be bought ikea record storage unit
-skull and crossbones band-aids to apply after hurting myself assembling said unit
-coffee grinder
-coffee

from parents:
-money
-new jeans!
-sweater
-electric can opener
-xmas/cat themed dishtowels
-lotto scratch cards (stocking)
-gum (stocking)

maybe a few other things i'm forgetting.

upon our arrival back from PA, i claimed my xmas bonus from reckless and promptly spent it. we just get a gift certificate to the store, which is fine with me. i got (along with a few extra bucks out of my own wallet):

-no punks in the pit comp (ivy league, billingsgate, dickey mo, mannequin hand . . . on yellow wax)
-hatebeak/longmont potion castle split 7"
-daughters, one-sided 7"
-sidekick kato, des plains 7" (with actual cover)
-project x, 7" (i guess this is a bootleg, as it's not the new re-issue, but it sounds fine)
-i attack, american dram 7"
-trepan nation, let there be danger 7"
-hatebreed, under the knife 7"
-hatred surge, S/T 7"
-shiner, sleep it off 7"
-mushuganas/chemical blue, split 7" (pink wax)
-a very punk christmas comp. 2x7" (green/red wax, gauge, sidekick kato, 88FL, fighters, blue meanies, cap'n jazz, bollweevils, and oblivion)
-das oath, live LP (one sided, silkscreened)
-faith no more, angel dust 2xLP
-cypress hill, S/T 2xLP (earmark reissue)
-misery index, overthrow LP (green wax)
-hirax, hate fear and power (original on metal blade)
-macabre, murder metal LP
-defleshed, royal straight flesh LP
-lord finesse, return of the funky man 2xLP (reissue)
-achtung chicago! zwei comp. LP (a bunch of bands)

so. back from pennsylvania. good times.

we left on Friday and drove the car to punk planet to leave it in the lot in case of getting majorly plowed in or something. walked down the street to the brown line and took that to downtown. transferred to the orange line and headed to midway.

out plane was delayed like an hour or so because of the mania that happened the night before. the flight to PA is only an hour long or so (which beats the eight hour drive) and missy's grandfather picked us up. he also arranged for a rental car for us! what a king.

he dropped us off at her mom's place and we went with her to the bar she works at. met up with her friend ken (who rules) and had some beers. ken was nice enough to give us a lift back to her mom's place and we crashed hard.

Saturday: picked up the rental car and went record shopping. first place we went to was closed forever. oops. headed to jerry's records and this time i didn't have to pee really bad. looked through all of the "alternative" section and found some stuff:

harvest - living with a god complex (i have this record already, but this copy had the poster with it)
spongetunel - morons . . . and monsters! (old chicago punk band on underdog records)
heretics - S/T (damon che's old band, never heard 'em before)
big'n - cutthroat (another old chicago-area band)

i didn't even look in the other room with all of the jazz because we only had so much time and i now had to pee. that place is overwhelming. all vinyl. their section for 45's is about half as big as reckless alone. it's insane. they have a metal section, but there was nothing good in it.

headed over to this place eide's. found some things in the sale bin:

immortal - sons of northern darkness (i've never heard these guys, either, but their records just got re-issued and this looked like an original)
all out war- for those who were crucified (i had this on CD years ago, but this was a still sealed copy on orange wax. i think we sell it for 20 used at reckless, and i missed having it. it was also six dollars.)

headed out of pittsburgh and back over to her grandfather's place for post-thanksgiving/pre-christmas dinner. it was good and i ate a lot. headed back to her mom's and then over to ken's. spent the night there because it was closer to pittsburgh.

Sunday: got up early and went to breakfast. then, we went to the steelers/bears game. we all know what happened there. our (free) seats, though, were amazing: 17th row behind the bears' bench, 47 yard line. damn. plus, it was a blizzard, which was pretty cool.

Sunday night: drove back to her grandfather's for a dinner of leftovers and then we went bowling. awesome.

Monday: got up and relaxed. dropped off the rental car and had some breakfast. missy's mom then took us back to the airport and here were are. our cats were pretty happy to see us, i think.

i have a dentist's appointment on Friday, as i've been putting off a teeth cleaning for too long now. busy week ahead! must get ready for work.
